Chapter News - October 15th

I’d like to start this update by sharing with you the title of two books I’ve just read that I’d like to recommend for anyone working in public relations. They are both written by Malcolm Gladwell – you’ve probably guessed and perhaps read these books already – they were both National Bestsellers after all. If not, I think you’ll enjoy them and want to pass them along.

The Tipping Point offers some great insights into how good ideas and trends suddenly tip and spread to become great ideas adopted by the masses or how behavior changes suddenly stick.  As a PR practitioner working in health communications, I like how I can apply many of the ideas shared in this book to the campaign I’m working on. And for anyone trying to sell ideas, products or those trying to change behavior, this book a gem. It’s an easy read too! And for those of us with short memories, I like how the author links the ideas and examples from chapter to chapter. Good review at the same time!

His second book, blink, is about how we make decisions, pass judgment, or assess a situation sometimes using a mountain of information when a snap decision, or what he calls “rapid cognition’ would have been more accurate. This is another easy read, but a really insightful look at how we make those quick decisions and how they can be extremely important and powerful in our personal and professional lives.
