With operations coast to coast, NAV CANADA provides air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings, aeronautical information services, airport advisory services and electronic aids to navigation.
Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Media Relations, the Media Relations Advisor is responsible for providing communications advisory services that include preparing contractual agreements; delivering various communications projects; and conceiving, developing and executing effective communications services that strengthen NAV CANADA’s reputation as a global leader in ANS.
The special focus of this position is the maintenance of open, positive ongoing relations with local, regional, national and international media. The management of relationships with reporters and editors, and the constant education of these important stakeholders on NAV CANADA is particularly crucial, along with the preparation of a wide variety of advocacy materials, their timely and effective distribution, and the accurate, effective provision of commentary on NAV CANADA issues, events and developments.
The incumbent is an effective external spokesperson for the Company - one of the primary external spokespersons (along with the Manager, Media Relations in the Department, and the Director, Communications or other designated spokespersons from senior management).
Accountability
- Assumes responsibility for relationships with key media contacts, with particular attention to media awareness and understanding of NAV CANADA and its programs and policies.
- Understands the organization and its issues, and prepares strategic advice on media relations positioning in line with corporate objectives.
- Responsible for 24/7 media response, responding to negative events while taking advantage of opportunities for positive media coverage as they arise.
- Provides a proactive, positive media coverage program.
- Writes media lines, news releases, backgrounders, speeches etc., following corporate disclosure rules in all cases.
- Acts as a spokesperson for NAV CANADA, facilitates and/or conducts telephone, face-to-face, or electronic (TV/Radio/Web) media encounters in an efficient and effective fashion in order to deliver accurate corporate position statements in an engaging fashion.
- Provides media relations support services including delivery of daily media scan, news wire distribution of news releases, ongoing subscriptions, updating the Media Room of NAV CANADA’s web site, and monitoring trends in media relations for incorporation into the NAV CANADA Media Relations mix.
Language Requirements: Bilingual
Requirements
- University degree in journalism or related field or another degree with equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Minimum 5 years experience in Media Relations.
- Extensive experience in communications writing.
- Sound knowledge of media structure and operations.
- Sound knowledge of media expectations of communication professionals.
- Knowledge and understanding of media trends and what makes “news” and why.
- Openly fosters and promotes company values of respect, excellence and service.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in setting priorities and dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and integrity.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
