What is a member?

CPRS defines a public relations practitioner as one who:

  • Designs public attitude research
  • Assists organizations in interpreting and managing their socio/political context
  • designs and implements public affairs programs
  • Designs, manages and implements communications programs or parts thereof, which use techniques such as news or trade media contact, newsletters or brochures, audio or audio-visual media, special events, public speaking, or other technical means of reaching and communicating with defined audiences or
  • Is a career teacher of public relations/communications at a post-secondary institution.

Membership is open to practitioners engaged in the field of public relations. Please contact CPRS Ottawa for more information.

Membership Categories

Full Member: A practitioner who practices public relations on a full-time basis for remuneration.

Accredited Member: a practitioner who has been granted Accreditation by the National Council on Accreditation.

Affiliate Member: A status available at the chapter level for people interested in public relations (such as suppliers), but who are not practitioners.

Associate Member: A practitioner who practices public relations on a part-time basis.

Individual Member: A practitioner who lives and works outside the geographic area of the nearest chapter.

Life Member: A status granted at the chapter level for voting members who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of CPRS and to the profession.

Student Member: a status available at the chapter level to students enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies accepted by the local CPRS Board. Depending on the chapter, student members may enjoy workshops pertinent to their needs, mentoring programs or networking opportunities through participation in the local Board.

Cost of Membership

For new members, a one-year membership in both CPRS and CPRS Ottawa/Gatineau is available for $393.90. This includes a $50 initiation fee and applicable GST.

Existing members can renew their membership in both CPRS and CPRS Ottawa/Gatineau for $340.40. This includes applicable GST. Previous members whose memberships have lapsed for more than two years must register as a NEW membership.

All memberships run from April 1st to March 31st annually regardless of the month of initial registration.

You can now renew online at www.cprs.ca/renewal. To renew online you must use the unique password (a combination of a randomly-generated word and your membership number) printed on your renewal notice. Your login is your email address. Renew your membership today for April 1st 2004 to March 31st 2005. This information is available through CPRS National in Toronto, www.cprs.ca.

To become a member, print off the CPRS national membership application (Adobe Acrobat PDF) fill it in then fax it back to CPRS Ottawa/Gatineau at 613-843-0151. Once signed off locally by the Membership Chair for approval it will be forwarded to the CPRS National office for implementation. Your membership information and kit will be handled by the National office including fees and invoicing should it be required.
